Can you describe to us how you decided to start Bold Babe?

The idea of Bold Babe was born through my own personal search for sun protective clothing. I simply couldn’t find any styles or designs or styles that I liked. Describe Bold Babe in three words.

What are the biggest lessons you have learned since starting Bold Babe?

There are so many lessons I have learned through Bold Babe. I have always sought out and welcomed a good challenge. Opening my own business has certainly forced me to grow through wins and losses. With a background in psychology and education, the lessons I have learned from a business standpoint have been incredible.

However, I think one of the most eye-opening lessons has been bringing my business back from Chinaand finding the right team to create my product. As with any developing skill, it look multiple tries to get the right formula and balance. Understanding the manufacturing and development process - from choosing the right fabric to the right pattern - has been an enormous learning curve. I have worked tremendously hard to find the right local printers, graphic designers, pattern makers and sewers to help bring it all together.

The evolution of the company has also provided me with a valuable lesson. When you start a company from the ground up, you are really a one woman show. While I like to think of myself as a good multitasker, I cannot take on everything. I quickly learned that I would have to delegate the things I cannot do. As Bold Babe progressed, I began to outsource work - from graphic design to hiring an accountant, to recently working with a marketing team.

In this journey, I have acquired a great appreciation for networking. I love being part of creative communities at farmers markets and various local events that bring together incredibly inspired people who are passionate about our work. Entrepreneurs think outside of the box and we are constantly in motion thinking and pondering our latest creations. Networking brings new life and community to Bold Babe and I adore being part of such vibrant communities.

Lastly, Bold Babe has allowed my creativity to flow. Ideas and creations have flown out of me that I never knew existed a few years ago. If you had asked me five years ago if I was an artist, I would have definitely said no. Today, if I don’t let that creativity from within flow, I feel stifled and stagnant in my life. Bold Babe has allowed me to find inner harmony.

What’s some advice advice you would give to women aspiring to start their own business?

Don’t be afraid to show your gift to the world. If you have an idea, get out there and create. Find passion in your art and your creations. Don’t be scared of how the world will judge you. Stick to a schedule and grow your business a little at a time so that you don’t get overwhelmed. But most importantly, the key to starting a wonderful business is finding the right people at the right time to help you evolve and flourish.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a self-made female entrepreneur?

For me, helping others protect their largest living organ, their skin, is tremendously rewarding. The fact that my products enrich and protect so many lives, it fills my heart with happiness and is what drives me on a daily basis.
